Nature Smart: Unique visitors to the bird feeder

The spring migration is a busy time of year in the natural world.
According to Cornell University Birdcast nearly three million migrating birds passed over my part of the northland on a recent spring night. Most of these migrating birds occurred around 4 to 4:30 a.m. and were traveling around 40 mph at an altitude of 700 feet.

The best deer hunting rifles for less than $700

State Roundup: Wisconsin’s elk herds growing, and public lands groups sue over corner crossing in Montana

Wisconsin’s northern and central elk herds are expected to gain at least 96 calves in total this spring, but that number could reach as high as 214.
However, it’s more likely that once all is said and done, the two herds will gain about 154 new members. Those numbers come from estimates the DNR’s two elk biologists – Josh Spiegel and Christina Kizewski – are bringing to the May 27 Natural Resources Board meeting in Madison.

Wisconsin Conservation Congress has new leadership

At its annual convention, the Conservation Congress discussed key resource issues, voted on about 44 spring hearing questions, presented awards, added to its Hall of Fame, and elected Paul Reith, 49, of Dane County, to fill the chair vacancy created when Rob Bohmann, of Racine, did not seek re-election.
Reith had been serving as the congress vice-chair. During its May 14-16 meetings at Tundra Lodge, delegates also elected Michael Britton, of Rice Lake, as vice-chair, and re-elected Reed Kabelowsky, of Manitowoc, as secretary.
