Research students net multiple giant sturgeon, including 90-incher at Wisconsin’s De Pere dam

This 88.58-inch lake sturgeon captured May 5 below the De Pere dam on the Fox River is the second longest ever measured. It grew four inches since its last capture on May 19, 2019. But even more impressive was its girth – 40-1⁄2 inches versus 33 inches when handled seven years ago. University of Wisconsin-Green Bay graduate Jacob Hoffman, of Coleman, got his feet wet fishing with his dad as a small boy years ago on the Peshtigo River.
More recently, he’s turned that love of all things finned into important research on the Fox River in De Pere. A graduate student working in the Green Bay Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Laboratory – part of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences at UW-Green Bay – Hoffman is working with Wisconsin’s largest and oldest fish species, the lake sturgeon.
