Former Illinois DNR director, now lawmaker, offers fix for rifle bill moving through legislature
A former Illinois DNR director who is now a lawmaker said out loud what deer hunters have been thinking since Senate Bill 2756 began creating confusion and frustration.
In a committee meeting, State Rep. Wayne Rosenthal suggested the bill be amended to “eliminate any reference to handguns.”

Research students net multiple giant sturgeon, including 90-incher at Wisconsin’s De Pere dam
University of Wisconsin-Green Bay graduate Jacob Hoffmann, of Coleman, got his feet wet fishing with his dad as a small boy years ago on the Peshtigo River.
More recently, he’s turned that love of all things finned into important research on the Fox River in De Pere. A graduate student working in the Green Bay Aquatic Ecology and Fisheries Laboratory – part of the Department of Natural and Applied Sciences at UW-Green Bay – Hoffmann is working with Wisconsin’s largest and oldest fish species, the lake sturgeon.

The Wisconsin DNR is accepting applications for the Shooting Range Grant Program through Aug. 15.
The program provides financial assistance for safe firearm or archery shooting opportunities. Managers of public or private ranges or members of the public interested in building a new range may apply. Ideal ranges are located near highly populated areas and offer educational programming for the public related to hunting and shooting sports. For-profit businesses are not eligible for funding.

Wisconsin’s waterfowl bag limits set for 2026 season
Taylor Finger, Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) game bird specialist, told the Natural Resources Board (NRB) that spring waterfowl population surveys show slight increases the past five or six years; however, the reason may be that warmer spring weather may have included migrating birds in the surveys rather than just local populations.
