Habitat loss drives decline of Ohio’s grouse as DNR proposes hunting changes

It’s a well-observed fact that there are fewer and fewer ruffed grouse on the Ohio landscape these days. In a recent interview with Ohio Outdoor News, ODNR Division of Wildlife biologist Mark Wiley explained why.
“Loss of grouse habitat is the problem,” Wiley said.
He stressed that the decline in grouse population is not a result of overhunting.

It’s difficult to find many pieces of land that don’t bear the scars of American “progress.” If there’s an upside, there is a metric boatload of habitat restoration opportunity on the landscape.
