County decisions come into focus on shotgun and rifle use for Minnesota’s deer season

Minnesota deer hunters may see different firearm rules this fall as counties decide whether to now allow rifles or still require shotguns for the 2026 deer season.
A 2025 law eliminated the state’s longtime “shotgun zone” and gives counties the authority to choose which firearms hunters may use. Many counties already have voted, while others are expected to decide in the coming weeks.

Audit raises concerns for Minnesota DNR’s readiness to launch new electronic licensing system

The Minnesota DNR’s electronic licensing system (ELS) could face additional delays after a recent audit identified ongoing concerns.
The Office of the Legislative Auditor (OLA) released a report April 8 outlining issues the DNR must address before fully launching the system. The project already has experienced significant setbacks, and the audit found the DNR has not met six of the 11 critical success criteria.

Idaho Fish and Game commissioner pleads not guilty to poaching bull elk

Brody Harshbarger, a sitting member of the Idaho Fish and Game Commission, has pleaded not guilty to seven hunting-related misdemeanor charges following a poaching investigation.
Investigators allege that Harshbarger, along with another suspected poacher, illegally shot and abandoned two elk in December 2025.
