Lake Redstone’s bass, panfish and muskies draw Wisconsin anglers to Sauk County

Lake Redstone is a 605-acre impoundment in northwest Sauk County that receives water primarily from the East Branch and West Branch of Big Creek. Construction began in the fall of 1964 and the flowage was filled in 1966.
Redstone offers an all-around fishery for panfish and game fish, including muskies and walleyes.

Nature Smart: The All-American coyote

On my recent photo tour to Yellowstone National Park, we had a hard time finding any wolves. The gray wolf is always our main species that we want to find and photograph, but on this year’s trip, it just wasn’t happening.
But while missing the wolves, we found the next best thing: coyotes (Canis latrans). Let’s look at this cool, often overlooked critter.

Tom Bahti: Remembering Wisconsin’s Mary Howley, Labrador breeder and trainer extraordinaire

Mary Candlewood Howley, of Madison, passed away Jan. 26 at the age of 85.
The terms icon, legend, giant, and such are used with some abandon to describe various individuals. Iowa’s driftless region a great place to cast a fly in late winter

My strike indicator had just landed at the head of a deep riffle when it jerked suddenly. I set the hook and saw the flash of a trout belly under the clear water as my little 3-weight fly rod bent deeply.
The fish raced into the fast water, heading downstream. I kept my rod tip high as rapid head shakes radiated up the fly rod to my arm. Eventually it slowed, and I guided the 12-inch Iowa brown trout into my son Jason’s waiting net.

Crews pulled 7 million pounds of invasive carp from Illinois River last year

Illinois crews pulled more than 7 million pounds of invasive carp from the Illinois River in 2025, putting the state’s’ invasive carp program a net-full or two of carp from hitting the 50 million-pound mark over 15 years of removal efforts.
Currently, the haul sits at just over 49 million pounds.
