Steve McComas: Winter conditions set the stage for summer in Minnesota lakes

This year’s early winter conditions lend themselves to a 1930s hardboiled detective type of story.
The first snow came early in Minnesota this year, and I was as surprised as a turtle coming out of hibernation in December. First, lakes sealed up with ice as clear as a picture window, then were slapped with a snowfall depositing a 6-inch-thick white down comforter across the hard lake surface in some places.

Remembering the first modern bighorn hunt in North Dakota 50 years later

State lawmakers passed Senate Bill 2210 a half-century ago, which opened the door for the first modern-day bighorn sheep hunting season in North Dakota.
The 12 once-in-a-lifetime licenses were issued by lottery and those fortunate to draw were required to be accompanied by a game warden or other Game and Fish Department personnel to make certain each hunter harvested a legal-sized ram.

Wisconsin NRB handles sharptail, waterfowl, turkey and elk rules

The Dec. 10 Wisconsin Natural Resources Board (NRB) meeting was filled with approvals of several proposed wildlife rules and scope statements from the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for sharp-tailed grouse, waterfowl, turkeys, and elk.
Scott Karel, DNR wildlife regulation policy specialist, explained that the first new rule creates two new harvest zones for sharp-tailed grouse, along with metrics for establishing hunting quotas.
