Ohio’s Jay Gullett wins both Fall Brawl, Walleye Slam on Lake Erie

Despite Mother Erie’s temper tantrums during October and November, hundreds of big walleye were still weighed in by anglers in the two fall walleye derbies again this year.
Both the Walleye Slam and Walleye Fall Brawl kicked off on Saturday, Oct. 18 and ended on Sunday, Nov. 30. During that time period, Lake Erie experienced some of the windiest fall weather in recent memory.

Dam removal on Ohio’s Stillwater River frees up multiple habitat miles

As part of Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine’s H2Ohio initiative, the Ohio DNR (ODNR) funded the removal of a low-head dam on the State Scenic Stillwater River in Miami County.
The project is intended to improve water quality in the river, throughout the watershed, and downstream into the Great Miami River by restoring the stream gradient, floodplain connectivity, and fish passage.

Treestand falls still the biggest threat to hunters

A hunter who fell from a treestand in Pennsylvania’s Armstrong County as firearms deer season dawned was recovering from traumatic injuries in early December.
The victim tumbled from his ladder stand in a wooded area in South Buffalo Township at around 7 a.m. Nov. 29, according to Freeport EMS chief Jamison Hughes, who declined to provide his name. The man had been hunting on private property about 400 yards off Jonathan Road with a friend, who called 911, said Hughes.
