Here’s why I need grouse hunting in my life

I’m a casual grouse hunter at best. I don’t own a pointing dog or a double-barreled shotgun. I don’t anticipate the grouse opener in Minnesota with the same zeal as I do the fishing opener or deer season. But over the years, I have learned that I need the grouse season.
It all started when I was wild and youthful and spending my summers working in Alaska.

Jeremiah Haas: Much we can learn from elephants

Recently, I was told the story about elephant populations in Africa, and the role each gender has for a stable population. This park was a remarkable success story in the recovery of elephants. While some of the elephants had to be culled, others were transported to other National Parks, to aid in their recovery programs.

Finding the motherlode black walnut tree or stand can provide the lucky hunter with some season-long action. Hungry bushytails will start working on the walnut’s green skin and dark hull as soon as the meat inside is fit to eat.
