Steve Piatt: Golf and trapshooting — a different range, a different game

My golfing days ended about 20 years ago when I decided to put the sticks aside and spend more time fishing and training our Labrador retrievers, or at least trying to get control of them.
What I liked most about golf was the process of improving, spending time at the range not beating balls but practicing with a purpose. These days, I still spend time at the range. But it’s instead the trap range, trying desperately to develop the kind of shotgunning form that will serve me well on pheasants, grouse, and woodcock this fall.

Steve Sarley: Passion shown by Illinois bowhunters remains clear

I recently reviewed a new book written by Lake County outdoorsman Mike Mitten.
I was extremely impressed by Mitten’s ability to describe the hunting experience on the printed page. The book, The Enchantment of Bowhunting, published by Herd Bull Productions, was a tale that anyone who has hunted is sure to enjoy. Mitten has very thoughtfully and generously given me a copy of The Enchantment of Bowhunting, to pass on to a reader.

Things are heating up below Minnesota’s waves, too; what will it mean for fisheries?

Few days go by without media attention to global warming. Writing about global warming is actually pretty low-hanging fruit because the evidence is unambiguous: the earth is warming.
This is nothing new, at least when we recall that 21,000 years ago there was a mile-thick glacier covering parts of the Upper Midwest, one of more than 20 such glacial advances in the past 2 million years.
All glacial retreats occurred because of global warming. However, the new part to the current warming trend is that climate (not weather) scientists think the warming is more rapid than in the past, and that there’s a strong likelihood humans have something to do with it.
