Sporting-clays efficiency equals shotgunning confidence and more birds in the bag

Summer is fading fast, and that’s fine with me. I don’t have the same passion for angling that I do for bird hunting, so when fall draws near, I concentrate on wingshooting gear and skills.
Chief among those is shotgun practice, which sees me and friends hitting sporting clays ranges with greater frequency. Putting in time on clays courses will pay dividends once bird seasons open. My pheasant-hunting companions all know I loathe missing a pheasant after my dogs worked to flush it in good range.

Tips and tricks to take advantage of Minnesota’s early teal and goose seasons

One bird is small, acrobatic and creates the illusion they can fly like the wind – at speeds exceeding 50 mph. The other is large (body and wingspan), migrates in a V-shaped formation, and almost lumbers across the sky by comparison.
In the world of waterfowl, the blue-winged teal and the Canada goose have really nothing in common, except that it’s open season for both waterfowl species beginning Sept. 6 in Minnesota. The first salvo of Minnesota’s waterfowl-hunting season has duck and goose hunters in full preparation mode.

Want to hunt big game from a ground blind? Pay attention to the finer details

Throughout my hunting career, I have spent many hours building blinds in a number of my hunting areas, where, after some serious scouting, I figured I could take a nice buck, black bear or long-spurred gobbler, depending on the hunting season.
If you have done the same, then you know it takes time scouting for that perfect spot, then searching and hauling logs, limbs, brush, corn stalks, marsh reeds or whatever material is on hand over to your chosen ambush spot.

Tom Bahti: Some thoughts about my favorite hunting gear

Everyone asks me about my favorite pieces and brands of outdoor gear. Well, OK, actually no one has ever asked me that question, but I thought I’d throw out my choices just to get people thinking and maybe stir the pot a bit.
Full disclosure: I have no affiliation with any of the brands or products that I mention in this piece. They are just items of equipment or clothing that I’ve found to be my preference(s) over a long time working and fooling around in the outdoors.

Michigan DNR’s statewide angling regulations under review

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources Fisheries Division presented several proposed changes in fishing regulations to the state Natural Resources Commission at the NRC meeting in Gaylord earlier this month.
All of the proposed changes are up for action by the Commission at its Sept. 11 meeting in Lansing. Among them are requests to implement a catch-and-immediate-release sturgeon season on the Menominee River and to establish a daily limit on burbot.

Jeremiah Haas: How spoiled we are as hunters, anglers to live in the Quad Cities area

Recently, I had the opportunity to go to Canada and do some fishing with my family. While we all dream of those magical adventures in the Northwoods, after a few days up there it became very clear to me how spoiled we were back in the Quad Cities with the resources we have.
The road there was almost as you would expect – if you were trying to get off the grid and leave society.
