I decided to hunt deer in an unfamiliar portion of a Mercer County, Pa., state game land. Darkness greeted me when I pulled into the parking area. With my favorite, 270 caliber, Model 70 Featherweight rifle, cradled in my arms, I walked a considerable distance into the unfamiliar forest. Eventually, I paused for about 10 minutes, waiting for the early-morning light to betray a good spot to watch for whitetails.
