Chicago pet treats being made from river’s silver carp

The experiment of feeding invasive carp to humans – Illinois DNR’s rebranding of the fish now known as “Copi” – continues to gain slow footing across the state and the rest of the country.
But at least one Chicago-based private company appears to be having more success with attracting dogs and other pets to carp at mealtime.

Ralph Loos: Catfish getting due spotlight on Wabash River from Illinois, Indiana researchers

A lot of attention given to catfish in Illinois is focused inland – on the hundreds of lakes and farm ponds that hold channel cats, blue cats, and flatheads.
The Mississippi, Illinois, and Ohio rivers, which stand long and wide on each side, also attract plenty of fanfare, especially from anglers with special river skills required to locate and hook each of those species. But often overlooked in the catfish conversation is the Wabash River, its Illinois portion covering a 200-mile long stretch from just above Darwin to the Ohio River down near Old Shawneetown.

Cazenovia Lake a Central New York warm-water hot-spot

There was a time when the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation didn’t pay a whole lot of attention to Cazenovia Lake for one simple reason: there wasn’t much public access to the Madison County water.
But things have changed a lot over the past decade-plus, and those improvements in access prompted the DEC to actively manage the 1,164-acre lake known these days as a quality warmwater fishery that attracts a fair amount of angling attention.

New York’s Hudson River shortnose sturgeon are on the rebound

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) recently announced new research that estimates the population of endangered shortnose sturgeon in the Hudson River to be nearly 70,000 individuals, likely making it the largest population of sturgeon anywhere in the world.
The study was coauthored by the U.S. Geological Survey Eastern Ecological Science Center. It was conducted in partnership with Cornell University, University of Delaware, Delaware State University, and DEC with funding from the Hudson River Foundation and DEC’s Hudson River Estuary Management Program.
