Fifty years ago, choosing a fishing line was pretty simple. It was all monofilament all the time.
Introduced in 1939, mono became the go-to line for most anglers by the 1950s. Although braided Dacron, the previous most popular fishing line was still on the market – and it remains to this day most folks’ top choice for tip-up fishing – it was used less as mono was cheaper, more widely available, and easier to use.
