John Welch spent a good portion of the 1970s in Ohio chasing the elusive muskie.
But it wasn’t until his son, Dan Welch, attended Ohio State University and started catching muskies at nearby Alum Creek Reservoir in the early 2000s that the elder Welch really got serious about the sport. This whole experience came to fruition on March 26 this year. On that day, fishing a Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District lake in southeast Ohio, John finally landed a 50-inch muskie, a fish he had only dreamed about.
