Wisconsin’s fishing opener not set by a calendar; ‘It’s a time of the heart’

As I write this, it’s the 30th of December. My next year’s calendar tells me Opening Day of the Wisconsin general fishing season is Saturday, May 3.
Do I look forward to it? Of course. That doesn’t mean I’ll actually fish on that day. Opening Day, for me, is a lot more personal than a square on the calendar. When I was younger and more foolish, I treated opening day almost the way a good Catholic boy treats a Holy Day of Obligation. That mostly brought me misery.

Illinois trapping season ends, fur marketing begins

Now that the beaver season is over, trappers are fully into marketing mode and have a range of options.
As for how Illinois trappers did during the 2024-25 season, it’s a bit early to determine. A quick look into one species, the river otter, reveals that a preliminary count from the DNR as March ended showed about 1,050 otter harvested throughout the state. The final count will go up some, but not much.
