Wisconsin DNR suppressing 720-acre wildfire in Green Lake County

The Wisconsin DNR says the fire is under investigation, and no DNR or private approved prescribed burn was in the area at the start of the fire.

Madison, Wis. — The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Monday that fire crews and local agencies are on the scene of a roughly 720-acre Big Island Fire in the White River Marsh State Wildlife Area in Green Lake County. The fire broke out at 4:30 p.m. today.

The fire is currently being held on the south side by County Road D.

Two residences have been evacuated, with six structures threatened but none lost. There are no injuries to report.

DNR fire suppression resources are on the scene, including six DNR engines, four heavy units (dozers with engines), two DNR low ground units, DNR air patrol and two U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service low ground units. Ten local fire departments and law enforcement are also assisting.

The fire is under investigation. No DNR or private approved prescribed burn was in the area at the start of the fire. The fire is burning on state and private lands.

People who live near the wildlife area are encouraged to avoid the area.

In addition, the DNR urges the public to check fire danger before conducting outdoor burning activities.

The DNR does not have any additional information at this time and will issue an update via a news release when more information becomes available.
