Wisconsin farmer in Richland County fined $27,416 for poaching more than 150 deer

A Richland County farmer who “made a game” of killing more than 150 deer from 2020 through 2021 has been fined $27,416.
He also has been sentenced to four months in jail, must serve three years worth of probation, and saw his hunting, fishing, and trapping privileges revoked for 42 years. Dominick R. Stanek, 61, of Viola, told investigators he shot the deer to prevent crop damage on his 207-acre farm near West Lima in southwestern Wisconsin.

Minnesota conservation officer, state trooper remove live deer from basement of Hibbing home

Anyone who reads the field reports from Minnesota DNR conservation officers each week knows that officers respond to a wide range of situations.
Reports run the gamut – from humorous at times to serious poaching incidents for those tasked with protecting the state’s fish and wildlife resources. There aren’t many calls that necessarily surprise a CO, but it’s safe to say that Derek Peterlin did not expect his day to end as it did Feb. 24, when he helped remove a live deer from the basement of a house in Hibbing after the deer had broken through a window.

New York hunter takes a record buck while grieving the death of his mother

Jethro Gibbs in the hit television show NCIS stated time and time again rule number 39: There are no coincidences. For Capt. Lucas Falkner of Greece (Rochester), N.Y., he may have taken that a bit further with a belief in divine intervention.
The result was a new New York State typical crossbow buck Falkner connected with on the final day of the Southern Zone early archery and crossbow season in Steuben County.

Kansasville, Wis., man gets 4.5 years jail time for assaulting a warden

More than 2.5 years after being assaulted and nearly losing his life, a Wisconsin DNR conservation warden found some justice on Wednesday, March 5, when Forest County Circuit Court Judge Leon Stenz sentenced Mark A. Szczerba, 43, of Kansasville, to 4.5 years in prison.
Stenz also ordered a period of extended supervision after the prison sentence is served. The judge ordered a psychological evaluation, the submission of a DNA sample, and no consumption of alcohol.

Tom Venesky: Time is now to implement regulations where new CWD cases have emerged in Pennsylvania

Ever since chronic wasting disease appeared in Pennsylvania in 2012, the state Game Commission has hammered home the importance of not spreading high-risk parts to other areas.
But it could be happening right now, and the agency isn’t doing anything to stop it. At least not yet. For the first time, the northeast region of the state now has confirmed cases of CWD  – two wild deer and one captive animal.

Ohio father, son capture calling, call-making titles at NWTF Grand National Calling Championships

In the world of competition turkey calling and call-making, let’s just say it’s tough to keep up with the Joneses.
That was truer than ever this year as Dustin Jones of Beaver, Ohio, came home from the National Wild Turkey Federation’s (NWTF) annual convention and sport show with two major awards, and his son, Ethan, returned with a calling championship.
