Ryan Rothstein: There’s no easy answers when it comes to energy consumption and the impacts on wildlife

Being a longtime Outdoor News subscriber (and perpetually behind in my reading), a few recent stories about wind energy, and the land easements that come with them, got my attention.
They got the wheels in my head spinning in a lot of directions – not the least of which is how our personal lens of experience can shape our perspective.

Jeremiah Haas: Tips for finding shed antlers during a mild winter

Shed antler hunting is a great excuse to get back out in the woods and get a small piece of that animal you were pursuing earlier in the year. Once in awhile, you get a bonus antler from a neighbor’s woods since you had better wintertime groceries.

Pennsylvania Game Commission ponders grants for meat processors in attempt to increase number of donated deer

Randy Ferguson believes the potential exists to increase the number of deer donated to Hunters Sharing the Harvest in Pennsylvania, but there’s a gap in the chain.

House panel holds hearing on Pennsylvania deer opener as many have their say

State Rep. Brian Smith, R-Punxsutawney, a member of the committee, recently reintroduced his bill to return the Monday after Thanksgiving opener (House Bill 70). The legislation has 12 co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle.

Drilling pad near Salt Fork State Park is site of well blaze in Ohio

It’s been a long-standing argument of the Save Ohio Parks group that oil and gas drilling rigs pose both a human and environmental threat to state parks and wildlife areas. The group opposes drilling.
An explosion and fire at a Gulfport Appalachia pad near Salt Fork State Park in early January might have added fuel to that fire.

Interested in buying forward-facing sonar? Here’s everything to consider

Forward-facing sonar (FFS) also is known as live sonar or real-time sonar. Manufactured in some form by all the major players in the sonar industry, it can allow anglers to actually determine the species and size of fish they see on their screens, and then watch as the fish responds to their lures.
