Nature Smart: Examining the great gray owl and its prey

The great gray owl’s facial disk acts like a satellite dish, funneling sound to its ears. This adaptation amplifies even the faintest noises, enabling the owl to detect and locate prey beneath snow with pinpoint accuracy. (Photo by Stan Tekiela)

The great gray owl is the tallest owl species, but it is not the heaviest or most powerful of North American owls.
