It was 10 years ago when a friend suggested a do-it-yourself hunt for mule deer in Montana. Although I’d hunted whitetails all my life, I had never even seen a mule deer, nor had I ever visited a western state, so it was with some trepidation that I agreed to apply for a permit.
That first hunt was mind-blowing and couldn’t have been more different than to what I was accustomed.
