Get to know the cardinal, the Christmas bird

If there is a Pennsylvania critter that represents Christmas, it must surely be the cardinal. Photographs or paintings of this colorful bird, often proudly perched on a snow-covered evergreen bough, grace many holiday greeting cards.
The bright red plumage of the male against a white and green background presents a striking image. The cardinal is a favorite at other times of the year, too. Seven states have selected the cardinal as their official state bird, including our neighbors in Ohio and West Virginia.

Nature Smart: The hunt for a perfect shot at a whitetail… with a camera

I was walking through the woods, moving slowly, making sure not to step on a stick or twig that might snap and make a loud noise. Thankfully, it had rained earlier, so the wet leaves dampened the sounds of my footsteps.
I was moving in near silence. Almost all the leaves had fallen from the trees, making it easy to see long distances within the woodland. In my hands I carried a large 500-mm lens and camera. I was on a photographic hunt for white-tailed deer.

It had been three weeks since the start of Minnesota’s regular duck-season opener, and it was another day of blue skies, no wind, and nearly 80 degrees. Not exactly ducky weather.
We were at our duck shack on Swan Lake near Nicollet. Swan is the largest prairie pothole in the United States, with more than 10,000 acres of marsh and … very few ducks at that time.
