The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources (DNR) announced on Thursday that a deer harvested near Wheaton in western Minnesota during the opening weekend of firearms season has tested positive for chronic wasting disease.
The adult male deer was harvested within deer permit area 271 along the Minnesota-South Dakota border. To date, no wild deer with CWD had been previously detected in DPA 271, nearby DPAs or near the Minnesota border in eastern South Dakota.

Deer hunters flocked to Ohio’s fields and forests Dec. 2 through Dec. 8 to help put a dent in most of the state’s 88 counties.
Based on data provided by the Ohio Division of Wildlife, hunters checked in 87,192 deer during the week-long gun season. This is the highest total since 2011 when 90,282 animals were taken. During the 2023 Ohio firearms deer hunting season, hunters reported killing 70,103. Likewise, the the three-year average is 70,806 animals.

An environmental group has gone to court seeking a ban on all-terrain vehicles in Pennsylvania state forests and parks following the expansion of a trail system through the Northern Tier.
The non-profit Pennsylvania Environmental Defense Foundation filed suit Dec. 2 in Commonwealth Court against Gov. Josh Shapiro, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources and DCNR Secretary Cindy Dunn, claiming that recreational use of ATVs in forests is unconstitutional and the plaintiffs have violated their duty to protect forests from their ecological impacts.

The Boone and Crockett Club announced this week that it will create a new category in its big game records for javelina, the first new category created since 2001.
The proposal to include a new big game category for javelina was brought forward to B&C’s Big Game Records committee by a working group made up of wildlife managers from Texas, New Mexico, Arizona, and Mexico as well as other hunting conservation groups.

The program seemed to work – at least for a while. The panfish grew, but go figure that they saw some increased fishing pressure as a result. The number of bass over 4 pounds also increased, but their size structure has declined a bit in recent years as well.
