Nature Smart: Why are some year’s fall colors better than others?

Under normal weather conditions of temperature, moisture, and sunlight, gorgeous colors will grace the north country landscape. Drought, unfortunately, prevented many prime scenes like this during autumn 2024. (Photo by Stan Tekiela)

This autumn has been dry and warm; that’s not a great combo for viewing fall colors. With more moisture and cooler nighttime temperatures, the display would’ve been so much better. But why do leaves change color and (some years) exhibit such an eye-popping show?
