I stood on a rise overlooking a sweeping cattle ranch in west-central South Dakota. The Missouri River pulsed and churned not far away. A flock of regal pintails wheeled in the distant sapphire sky. A spectacular uprising of autumnal colors – hues of butterscotch, lemonade, crimson, and everything in between – blanketed the landscape.
