Steve Carney: Targeting deep water and where to find July fish

Walleyes are there to be had during the warm months of the season, but you may need to fish extremely deep water, while also knowing that the fish you catch from that water likely won’t survive release. Be prepared to keep what you catch. (Photo by Steve Carney)

Both walleyes and crappies have now began to move into deeper water. I’ve noticed this in several lakes recently, and when I say deep, I mean 25 to 45 feet of water.
Finding perch can provide a clue regarding walleye depth, because both species tend to school at the same depth during July. That said, cloudy weather can cause fish to move shallow, but this usually happens early in the morning and late at night.
