Wisconsin DNR’s ‘no guns for fishing’ rule challenged in court

The Wisconsin Institute for Law and Liberty (WILL) has challenged a DNR administrative rule that states no person may, “Possess or control any firearm, gun or similar device at any time while on the waters, banks or shores that might be used for the purpose of fishing.”
Skylar Croy, a WILL lawyer, says that rule – Wisconsin Administrative Code NR 20.05(2) – violates the Second Amendment.  The rule goes back to 1966, according to Croy, when a regulation went into effect that banned the shooting of muskies. That regulation, however, did not address something such as carrying a pistol for self defense.
Harvesting fish with a firearm is still illegal in Wisconsin, which is not the crux of the issue, according to Croy.

Progress on EHD benefits the Illinois deer herd

These days, there’s a bit of apprehension in Tom Collings’ stride when he begins his annual inspection of hunting property along the Illinois River.
His weekly walks begin in August and continue through September, as he prepares locations to place his deer stand for the Oct. 1 archery season opener. Some years he finds dead deer.
“The year 2012 was the worst, by far, but there have been other bad years,” Collings said.

Wisconsin State Roundup: Still no resolution to suspended trout rearing program

Local sportsmen’s club volunteers who have raised trout in cooperation with the DNR for more than 55 years continue to try to make sense of the agency’s decision to suspend the popular co-op rearing program.
Since we ran the initial story earlier this month, members of the Independence Elk Rod and Gun Club have contacted local legislatures in an effort to get some sort of response from the agency. Rep. Treig Pronschinske, R-Mondovi, picked up the ball last week, but had no resolution for the club as of press time for this issue.
