What anglers and boaters need to know about Harmful algal blooms in New York waters

Occurrences of harmful algal blooms are expected to be on the rise during the summer period. Not all algal blooms are “harmful” but those that have the “pea soup” appearance shown above should be both avoided and reported to New York DEC and its partners. (Photo by NYSDEC)

Harmful algal blooms, referred to by most as simply HABs, seem to be more and more prevalent as we come to understand them.
