Could Lake Superior’s Apostle Island National Lakeshore in Wisconsin become a national park? Plan gains traction

An effort by Rep. Tom Tiffany, Wisconsin’s District 7 Congressman, to change the status of Lake Superior’s Apostle Island National Lakeshore to a national park is gaining traction.
Tiffany recently notified the Bayfield County Board of his proposal, stating a representative from his office would like to make a presentation to Bayfiled County’s executive committee on July 11.

One of those lakes can be found less than five miles from Woodruff in the Northern Highland/American Legion State Forest.

Minnesota’s 2024 spring drumming counts show highest peak for ruffed grouse since 1972

Minnesota’s ruffed grouse spring population counts are similar to last year and to other recent peaks in the 10-year population cycle of grouse — a pattern recorded for 73 years, according to a study from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.
The Minnesota DNR and its partners use spring drumming counts to help monitor the ruffed grouse breeding population through time.
The recent grouse population trend includes a low point in the cycle in 2021 that was not as low as previous lows, followed by the highest peak this year since 1972.

Looking for a new compound bow? The 2024 lineup has many good options

While the bowhunting season is still a couple of months away, archers looking for a new compound bow will want to get into a local pro shop soon so they can get in plenty of range reps before the opening bell.
Shops are stocked well right now, unless a person needs a custom rig, so chances are you can grab a new bow in the morning and be shooting tacks that same afternoon.

First-time hunters flock to Wisconsin learn-to-hunt turkey program

Charlie Wanty was only a teenager when he shot his first turkey in 2004.
Twenty years later, his love of turkey hunting is stronger than ever and he is now president of the Waupaca, Wis., learn-to-hunt program that helps first-timers enter the sport. More than 30 novices were in this year’s program, held April 6-7 at Brooks Dairy Farm near Waupaca.
“I didn’t grow up in a hunting family,” Wanty said. “I started hanging with some buddies who liked to hunt. This program was an outlet to get into something.”
