Commentary: Minnesota casts a lifeline against invasive carp

The author, Colleen O'Connor Toberman with Friends of the Mississippi River, writes that the Minnesota DNR needs to complete the deterrent installation at Lock and Dam 5 in the Mississippi River as quickly as possible, saying the sooner the barrier is installed, the more effective protection it will provide. During the past few years, I’ve watched with alarm as we find more and more invasive carp in the Mississippi River in southern Minnesota. I’ve worried about how far these fish will spread and how much damage they will cause. I’ve worried that a day will come when we stop boating on the river for fear of being injured by jumping silver carp.
However, we now have a reason for optimism: a $12 million investment from the Minnesota Legislature.
