Fish facts that are sure to impress your buddies on opener

A lifetime of being a “fish geek,” as the late Roland Sigurdson put it to me, blessed me with inexhaustible curiosity of all things fish and fishing. That passion for fish translated into a career in fisheries science (Wait a minute, you’ll pay me to do this? You’re joking, right?) with occasional writing duties.
Here are more than 60 fisheries phrases to get you started down your own path to fishy wisdom. No, you won’t be tested at a later date, but you’ll surely be able to share what you’ve learned with your fishing-opener friends in 2024.

New York archer from Washington County pursuing Paralympic dream

Chris Hall has never let his disability stand in the way of his hunting and fishing desires. The 28-year-old accomplished archer from Greenwich, in Washington County, N.Y., is primarily wheelchair bound due to a rare defective gene disease that has plagued him since childhood. But that’s not about to stop him from literally taking a shot a making the U.S. Paralympic archery team.
Hall is headed for the second of two try-outs, or qualifiers: the Gator Cup, taking place in Newbury, Fla., May 13-14. Should he succeed, a trip to Paris, France, in August and September to represent his country on the Paralympic archery course would be in order.

New York hunter reflects on rare opportunity to take massive Pennsylvania bull elk

So it is with Hunter Beiler, of Rexville, N.Y., (Steuben County), who said he’s been involved in hunting most of his life, along with the rest of his family.
Thus it was only natural the entire close-knit family would take part in Beiler’s greatest hunting triumph to date – putting an arrow through a massive Pennsylvania bull elk in September 2023.
