Pen-rearing projects boost salmon stocking in New York

Every Chinook salmon stocked in Lake Ontario will be reared in pens in 2024, a process that started the last week of March this year due to the mild winter, except for Salmon River fish. (Stock photo)

For over 25 years, pen rearing projects for salmon and trout have been implemented in Lake Ontario to help the stocking efforts of New York DEC’s Bureau of Fisheries. In 2024, there are nine cooperative pen-rearing projects in the basin, including nearly 823,000 Chinook salmon and over 70,000 steelhead.
