This year’s Great Lakes ice cover is currently below average, which means a decrease in revenue for ice fishing businesses across the region.
In Michigan, winter recreation including ice fishing brings in more than $3 billion in revenue each year. James Kessler, a physical scientist at the NOAA Great Lakes Environmental Research Lab said the lakes got a late start with ice-making this season.
