State Roundup: Wisconsin sturgeon spearers anxiously monitor the ice situation on Lake Winnebago system
Most any angst associated with this warm spell is going to center on the Lake Winnebago system where sturgeon spearers were anxiously monitoring the ice situation last week.
The 16-day sturgeon season will open Saturday, Feb. 10, ice or no ice. The DNR does not have the authority to close the season based on ice conditions. Sturgeon spearers must make their own decisions as to whether they have “safe” ice upon which to travel.
