Deer permit area 342 added to Minnesota CWD management hunt Dec. 15-17

Deer permit area 342 near Wabasha has been added to other DPAs in southeastern Minnesota and the south metropolitan area where hunters can harvest deer during a late-season chronic wasting disease management hunt. DPA 342 was added to the hunt after a deer harvested there this fall tested positive for CWD.

Still seeking a buck? December deer hunting means putting in your time

If you’re still holding onto a buck tag, early December deer hunting can be a strange time.
The orange army has passed through, there are fewer deer in the woods resulting from firearms season harvest, and most of the deer herd can’t seem to decide if they’re still rutting or if they’re packing on the pounds for winter. But there’s one segment of the herd that’s decidedly more interested in breeding than feeding: mature bucks.

Volunteers assist Wisconsin DNR with lake sturgeon conservation on St. Croix River

Sometimes to get the job done, you have to call in the reinforcements.
The Wisconsin DNR has recently done just that in its lake sturgeon tagging program. And thanks to a handful of dedicated citizen anglers, several hundred more St. Croix River “dinosaurs” are sporting new bling.
Since August, volunteer anglers have caught just over 400 sturgeon on hook and line, and turned them back to the St. Croix with tags that should provide valuable data for years to come. This will build on work begun in 2015, when Wisconsin DNR fisheries personnel began netting and tagging below St. Croix Falls each spring.

Iowa DNR hosts webinar that promotes CWD vigilance, details testing options

Outdoor enthusiasts across Iowa were encouraged to join the effort to curb Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD), including everything from reporting sick animals to stopping supplemental feeding, during a webinar Wednesday night hosted by the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
The program featured an update on the disease as well as DNR efforts to manage outbreaks.  A representative also offered dos and don’ts for hunters who shoot a deer during the upcoming gun-deer season.

Commentary: Support changes to the Clean Water Bill

To protect clean water in the wake of weakened protections triggered by the Supreme Court’s Sackett v EPA decision, the Izaak Walton League has endorsed H.R. 5983, the Clean Water Act of 2023, which was introduced in Congress on Oct. 18.
Safeguarding our nation’s waters ultimately depends on Congress amending the Clean Water Act to specifically include tributary streams, wetlands and other waters in the definition of the waterbodies protected by the Act.
