New York DEC: Salmon River fish spearing legal in certain cases

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation officials confirmed that, in some instances, reported recent fish spearing incidents by Native Americans on the Salmon River, near Atmar, were legal.
DEC’s Fisheries Bureau Chief Steve Hurst, and Peter Reuben, who is DEC’s first Director of its new Office of Indian Nation Affairs, both confirmed that Native Americans with the proper authorization are able to legally harvest fish in that location. Others, who did not have permits but were spearing fish, were ticketed.
