Wisconsin farmed CWD-positive deer in Washburn County to start bait ban in four counties?

The farm where a captive deer was confirmed positive for CWD is located in the very southeast corner of Washburn County in the town of Birchwood and less that 10 miles from three other counties – Sawyer, Rusk and Barron. (Stock photo of wild deer by Jeff Lawler)
A recent Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) press release sent shudders through northwest Wisconsin with news that a farmed deer positive for CWD was found on a Washburn County deer farm. While DATCP didn’t name the deer farm with the infected deer, DNR Wildlife Biologist Nancy Christel, of Spooner, confirmed the deer is from a farm once called Thun-Deer Trophy Whitetails, a 150-acre hunting ranch with about 300 deer in southeast Washburn County near Birchwood. An online search indicates the property may have changed ownership and name in the last few years and is now an LLC registered in Minnesota.
