Minnesota’s shotgun zone debate for deer hunting continues in committee

An amendment centered around eliminating the shotgun zone in the southern part of Minnesota would allow hunters to use rifles for deer hunting, with the exception of Olmsted and Dodge counties where hunters would continue to only be allowed shotgun and pistol use. It was voted in favor 34-30 and added to the omnibus bill. (Stock photo)
The Legacy Committee met Wednesday, April 26, for the first time, while the Environment, Natural Resources, Climate, and Energy Committee held its inaugural meeting on Monday, May 1. Moving forward, the committees will work to find common ground to pass omnibus bills that eventually will hit the House and Senate floors. In addition to debating the potential removal of the shotgun zone, also pending are gun bills, and a wolf hunt ban.
