East Palestine fish kill after train derailment increases substantially

Ohio DNR Division of Wildlife staff used a science-based formula to calculate the number of dead animals over the full five-mile length of the affected streams after the East Palestine train derailment on Feb. 3, 2023. That number turned out to be 38,222 minnows and small fish and 5,550 other species such as crayfish and other amphibians. (Stock photo)
Potential financial restitution for fish and other amphibians killed when a Norfolk Southern train derailed and caught fire in this eastern Ohio town on Feb. 3 has grown substantially.
