During a long, snowy, cold winter, how will pheasants fare?

When we arrived at a state wildlife management area, the adjacent fields were full of birds digging out feed from an unplowed beanfield. It seemed that everywhere we looked there were birds were feeding across a snowy landscape that looked like the moon.
