Indiana Fishing Report – December 17, 2021

North Zone

Lake Michigan (boat)

Angler effort has been low in most ports, with cold weather fully setting in. Lake trout will stick around until the spring, and be available to casters, jiggers, and trollers near rocky structure. Perch have been hit or miss in the Cal Park area, but some decent catches have been reported on minnows when the fish are cooperating.

Lake Michigan (shore)

Effort has been low. When the weather has cooperated, lake trout and whitefish have been caught. Spoons, spinners, and blade baits for the lake trout and small bits of skein, crawlers, or waxworms on the bottom for whitefish.

Lake Michigan Tributaries (Trail Creek, Little Calumet River, Salt Creek)

There are steelhead in all the tributaries. The cold weather has made them lethargic. Spawn, jig and waxworms, and spinners have all taken fish. Focus on slower and smaller presentations with the cold water as fish will not be aggressive. Trail Creek skamania broodstock collection is complete and the lamprey barrier will be in free passage mode until ice up. St. Joseph River (below Twin Branch Dam)

The cold water temperatures have brought the steelhead run to a crawl. Only 36 steelhead have gone through the South Bend Fish Ladder in December. Water temps recently warmed up which may bring in some more fish over the next few days. The total fall steelhead run stands at 2,396, which is almost identical to the long-term average for this time of year. With cold water, focus on smaller live bait presentations (or beads), or plugging to elicit strikes

Northern Indiana Lakes

We are in the transition period between open water and ice fishing. If lakes remain ice-free, anglers that have not winterized their boats can get out and find fish in their winter patterns and use ice fishing techniques from their boats to catch panfish. Otherwise it is a waiting game for ice.
