As ice thickness continues to increase, so do the fishing opportunities. Here’s what they’re catching and where.
Shallow crappies on the chow … We got pounded with snow and it certainly changed the mobility dynamic, but we didn’t let that stop us and we chased a super-fun bite. Punched a pile of holes and were constantly on the move, but a lot of crappies made it topside.
We are in limbo between open water and ice fishing on most lakes. Weather has not been cold enough for widespread ice thick enough for ice fishing in most areas, but is prohibiting boat fishing on lots of lakes.
A lot of fishable options on Mille Lacs now, but still, keep an eye on ice conditions. Fishing-wise, it’s a matter of getting out to where you want to be.
Places like the Adirondacks, Catskills and anywhere else where lakes are at higher elevations should be seeing some action if cooler weather arrives, with light winds.
In 2020, there were 20 DNR-sanctioned fishing tournaments on Centralia. A total of 513 bass were caught, with the biggest three weighing in at more than 5.5 pounds. Several in the 5-pound range were also caught during the year.
And once you’re on the lake, there are plenty of fishing options, including panfish (pumpkinseeds, black crappies), yellow perch and chain pickerel.
