Michigan Fishing Report – November 13, 2020

Editor’s note: Anglers fishing on border waters are reminded that the border with Canada remains closed. At this time it is illegal to fish in Canadian waters and doing so could result in a minimum of a heavy fine.

SOUTHEASTERN LP

Lake St. Clair

Perch fishing has been “unbelievable” on Lake St. Clair. Anglers report catching fish off the Grosse Pointe Yacht Club from close to shore all the way out to 17 feet of water. Anglers are having to sort through them to find the keepers, but are catching a lot of fish. A few walleyes and bass are being caught along with the perch. Waterfowl hunting has been pretty good, flight birds are still arriving. The archery deer season was pretty good and the firearms season should also be good.

Lake Orion

The archery deer season was good and the firearms season also should be good with a lot of deer in Oakland County. The rut is on. Fishing pressure has been light on inland lakes, although a few bass anglers were out on Lake Orion when the weather warmed up. Since then it’s been pretty quiet.

Trenton Area

Walleye fishing has heated up on the Detroit River. Anglers are reporting catching fish from the mouth of the river all the way to Wyandotte.  Limit catches are being reported in the Trenton Chanel with the best action coming in the mornings and late afternoons. Fish up to six pounds have been caught, but the bigger fish are hit or miss. A lot of “eater-sized” fish are being caught.

SOUTHWESTERN LP

Sturgis Area

The archery deer season was good in St. Joseph County. The rut is on and bucks are on the move. The firearms deer season should be good, too. There are a lot of deer in the area. Fishing pressure has been very light on inland lakes as most folks seem to be hunting.

Coloma Area

Crappies are hitting in Paw Paw and Magician lakes. Minnows have produced a pretty good bite in 40 feet of water, 20 feet down, but fishing pressure has been light. Steelhead fishing has been good in the Paw Paw, Black, and St. Joe rivers. Spawn, wax worms, skein, and spinners have all taken fish. The archery deer season was pretty good in Barry County. The rut is on and the firearms deer season should be very good. Most of the corn was down by the start of the firearms season.

Hastings Area

Bluegills are hitting on many lakes in the area, but fishing pressure has been very light. Waterfowl hunting has been slow. Steelhead action has been pretty good in the Kalamazoo and Grand rivers. Spawn, wax worms, and spinners are taking a fair numbers of fish. There were still some woodies and mallards around and waterfowl hunting remains pretty good. The archery deer season was very good with several big bucks being taken. The firearms season should be a good one. The rut is on and bucks are chasing does. Corn was coming down fast prior to the start of the gun season.

Union Area

Fishing pressure has been very light in Cass County with most anglers trading in their fishing poles for a firearm. The archery deer season was good and hunters were expecting a pretty good gun hunt. Most of the crops are down and bucks are chasing does. The rut is on.

CENTRAL LP

Saginaw Bay Area

Bucks are on the move and the rut is on in mid-Michigan. The crops are down and the firearms deer season should be very good. Perch fishing remains pretty good in Lake Huron’s Saginaw Bay. Anglers report a good bite on minnows fished in 16 to 18 feet of water off Linwood. A lot of 12- to 15-inche fish have been caught. Anglers are also catching good numbers of perch in the Linwood Marina.

Weidman Area

The archery deer season was very good in Isabella County and the firearms season should be very good, too. There are a lot of deer in the area. The rut is on and bucks are chasing does. Most of the crops were down by opening day of gun season. Pike  and walleye are hitting minnows on Coldwater Lake, but fishing pressure has been very light.

Ludington Area

Bluegills are still hitting in Hamlin Lake. Worms and wax worms are producing the best bites. A few walleyes have been caught on nightcrawlers and crankbaits with the best action coming in times of low light. Fair steelhead action has been reported in the Pere Marquette River. Spawn, waxies, flies, and spinners are all producing good results. Most of the crops are down and the firearms deer season should be good. Deer numbers are in good shape. The rut is on and bucks are on the move.

THE THUMB

Caseville Area

The perch bite has been very good in Mud Creek. Burbott and walleye are hitting in Lake Huron off the breakwall in Caseville. Waterfowl hunting has been outstanding. There are a ton of geese in the Thumb and divers are arriving daily. The archery deer season was very good with several big bucks being taken in the area.  The firearms season should be great. The rut is on and bucks are on the move. Most of the crops have been harvested.

Port Huron

Perch fishing has been pretty good at Harbor Beach, Port Sanilac and Lexington. No limits have been reported, but anglers are catching enough for a meal or two.  Atlantic salmon have moved into Lexington Harbor, but most seem to have lock jaw. Light numbers of steelhead have been caught in the harbor. Walleye fishing has been good in the St. Clair River. Those anglers whipping at night are catching good numbers of eater-sized fish. The water temperature is still in the upper 40s. The archery deer season was very good. Crops are mostly down and the firearms season should be great. Bucks are chasing does and the action has been hot.

NORTHWESTERN LP

East Jordan Area

Fishing pressure has been very light on Lake Charlevoix. Good numbers of perch have been caught but most are small. A good perch bite has been reported at Harbor Springs, too.  The archery deer season has been good and the firearms season should also be good. The rut is on. Bucks are chasing does. Flight ducks and geese are still arriving and waterfowl hunting remains good.

Kalkaska Area

The rut is on. Bucks are chasing does and the firearms deer season should be a good one. Fishing pressure has been light on Kalkaska County lakes, but a few anglers report catching decent numbers of walleyes on Manistee Lake. There are still a few salmon, mostly cohos, in the Manistee River, but most anglers are targeting steelhead. Anglers using spawn, skein, flies, beads, and spinners are all catching fish.

Frankfort Area

The archery deer season was pretty good in Benzie County with a few nice bucks being taken. The rut is on and bucks are on the move. The gun season should also be pretty good. Fishing pressure has been light in the area, but a few anglers report catching steelhead  off the pier in Lake Michigan.

Cadillac Area

Fair numbers of steelhead have been caught in the Manistee River.  Spawn, skein, spinners, and flies are all taking fish. A few walleyes have been caught at night on crankbaits fished in the shallows on lakes Mitchell and Cadillac. The archery deer season was pretty good and the firearms season should be good, too. The rut is on. Bucks are fired up and chasing does.

NORTHEASTERN LP

Houghton Lake Area

A few walleyes have been caught in Houghton Lake. The best action has been at night in the shallows, but fishing pressure has been very light. Most are focused on deer hunting. Bucks are rubbing and scraping, and the rut is on. Archery hunters reported seeing decent numbers of whitetails in Roscommon County and several nice bucks were killed. The firearms season should be a good one.

Higgins Lake Area

Archery deer hunters enjoyed a pretty good season and the firearms season should stack up to be pretty good, too, weather permitting. The rut is on and bucks are on the move. Waterfowl hunting remains decent. Flight birds are still arriving on most days, but action is starting to dwindle. Perch fishing has been pretty good  on Higgins Lake, but fishing pressure has been light. Those dunking minnows around the islands are catching good numbers of fish, but are having to sort through them to find the keepers.

Atlanta Area

The rut has exploded and the firearms deer season should be very good. Deer numbers are in good shape in Montmorency County and bucks are on the move. The archery season was very good. Flight birds have moved down and waterfowl hunting remains very good. Fishing pressure has been extremely light.

Rogers City Area

The archery deer season has been very good with several nice bucks being killed in the area including an 11-pointer that dressed out at 192-pounds. The rut is on. The firearms deer season should be very good. Fishing pressure has been light on Lake Huron and on inland lakes and streams. The  few who have ventured out are targeting young king salmon in Lake Huron or working on walleyes south of the Swan River.

EASTERN UP

Pickford Area

Bowhunters reported mixed results during the archery season. The rut is on, but hunters report seeing a lot of wolves. The firearms deer season should be good. Archery hunters report seeing  a lot of deer in the fields. Fishing pressure has been light, but those who are heading out report catching decent numbers of walleyes in Munuscong Bay. Those fishing in 12 to 15 feet of water are catching good numbers of fish on crawler harnesses and larger crankbaits. Anglers report catching a few muskies in the bay, too.

Drummond Island Area

Fishing pressure has been very light around Drummond Island, even on the recent days with very nice weather. The focus has turned to whitetails. The archery season has been pretty good and a couple nice bucks have been taken. The rut is on and bucks are chasing does. There are a lot of deer on the island and the firearms season should be a good one. Hunters report seeing a lot of big bucks on their trail cameras.

Curtis Area

The archery deer season has been decent in Mackinac County. The rut is on and action is picking up. The firearms season should be pretty good. Fishing pressure has dwindled down to a ripple on Manistique Lakes, although there are a few avid anglers still getting out on the open water. They report catching a mixed bag of walleyes, pike, bluegills, and rock bass.

CENTRAL UP

Escanaba Area

Fishing pressure has been light on Lake Michigan’s Little Bay de Noc. Those who are still sneaking out on the bay report catching good numbers of walleyes and northern pike. The best action has been around the reefs and at the Black Bottom. The late evening bite has been the best. The rut is on. Bucks with swollen necks are chasing does. The firearms season should be good. Deer numbers are in pretty good shape.

Iron Mountain Area

Deer numbers are in good shape in Dickinson County and the firearms season should be good. Hunters are getting pictures of some nice bucks on their trail cameras. Bucks are on the move and chasing does. The rut is on and the firearms season should be a good one. Fishing pressure has been light on the Menominee River and the local inland lakes in the area as most people’s attention has turned to whitetails. .

WESTERN UP

L’Anse Area

The archery deer season has been very good and the firearms deer season should be a good one, too. The rut is on. Bucks are chasing does and tearing up the woods. Boat anglers are catching salmon and trout in  Lake Superior’s Keweenaw Bay. A few coho salmon and lake trout have been caught in the bay, but numbers and fishing pressure have been light. River fishing for steelhead has been pretty good on the Falls and Silver rivers. Anglers report catching a few coho and brown trout, too, but nothing to write home about.

Bergland Area

Fishing pressure has been very light on Lake Gogebic. A few shore anglers are catching walleyes in the shallows. The best action has been in the evenings with sucker minnows and stickbaits. The rut is on and bucks are chasing does. The archery season has been fair. Deer numbers are up slightly from last year. There was a dusting of snow on the ground and hunters are expecting a fair firearms deer hunting season.

Iron River Area

Fishing and fishing pressure have been light in Iron County with cold temperatures taking a toll on those hoping to get out for some late season open-water action. The archery deer season has been good and hunters report getting a lot of pictures of deer, including some nice bucks, on their trail cameras. The rut is on and the deer are out there so it should be a good firearms season.
