Indiana Fishing Report – October 30, 2020

Lake: Lake Michigan (boat)
Fishing report: A few lake trout were showing up near shore and being caught in Michigan City Harbor by trollers and casters but not many people were out fishing. Lake trout were caught by trollers and jiggers at the Port of Indiana. They are in full spawning mode right now. Whitefish are also in the area keying in on lake trout eggs. The water is a bit warm for the fall perch bite to really pick up in Cal Park and harbors, but should get going any day. Remember to check the wave forecast before planning a trip – https://www.weather.gov/marine/iwxmz. Select the area of the lake you are planning on fishing to obtain the local wave forecast. The Michigan City buoy was retrieved for repairs and may not be redeployed this season https://glbuoys.glos.us/45170

Lake: Lake Michigan (shore)
Fishing report: A few lake trout were caught in the Michigan City Harbor, as the creek and harbor temps were colder than the main lake and the trout were seeking out cooler water. Deep diving cranks and blade baits, along with spinners are good bait choices. As the water cools, anglers targeting bass at the Port, East Chicago, and Hammond breakwalls should see some good action for lake trout. Whitefish are also just starting to show up nearshore to spawn – in the next couple weeks their numbers should continue to increase

Lake: Lake Michigan Tributaries (Trail Creek, Little Calumet River, Salt Creek)
Fishing report: Much-needed rain reinvigorated the area tributaries and got fish moving some. The salmon are winding down but skamania holdovers are biting a bit better in Salt Creek and Trail Creek, and a few early winter-run steelhead are showing up. Some lake trout are being caught in the lower sections of Trail Creek near the casino. Trail Creek skamania broodstock collection is complete for the year and the Lamprey Barrier is in free passage mode until ice up. Lake: St. Joseph River (below Twin Branch Dam)
Fishing report: Water temps continue to fall and are finally reasonably cool for this time of year. Coho are somewhat winding down but more steelhead and a few big kings are showing up. As of October 15th, just under 950 steelhead had come through the ladder during the fall run, along with 1200 coho and 75 kings. Brightly colored spinners and crankbaits are a good multi-species lure this time of year, and using skein or spawn for coho and steelhead is a tried and true tactic. Walleye action is picking up at night on jerkbaits or crankbaits. Recent rains should really help the trout and salmon run pick up.

Lake: Worster Lake (Potato Creek)
Fishing report: Hybrid striped bass in Worster Lake are plentiful with the majority of the fish between 18 and 22 inches (3 to 4 lb fish). The largest fish collected during a recent DNR fish survey was 29” and 11 lbs. They appeared to be actively chasing small gizzard shad in many areas of the lake last week.Anglers fishing over deep water 10-14 ft can catch crappies on artificial bait or minnows. Water temperature was 60 F on 10/6/20. Big bass are shallow. During the survey at multiple locations throughout the lake numerous 17” bass were observed in shallow water largest observed was 20”. The nice fish were everywhere likely feeding on the abundant small shad and bluegills. In addition to the big bass, Worster Lake would be a good lake to try carp fishing. Multiple 20+lb carp were observed, most were seen along the southern shore adjacent to deeper water, but smaller fish were scattered throughout the lake. Some nice crappies were observed in deeper water where there was a sharp shoreline drop off but mostly single fish and no aggregations.
