Wisconsin’s 2020 duck hunting season will begin Sept. 26 in the North Zone and Oct. 3 in the South Zone and Mississippi River Zone, with a six-bird bag limit.

The Natural Resources Board approved the 2020 season AND also approved new duck hunting zones for 2021 through 2025, which will include a North Zone, South Zone, and a new Big Water Zone for Lake Michigan and Green Bay.  These zones are now being proposed to the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.

The NRB approved the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) recommended 2020 seasons at a special meeting by telephone conference April 1.

The meeting would ordinarily have been held April 8, but was cancelled due to COVID-19.

Major changes from last season, include:

• Increasing the hen mallard daily bag limit to two per day;

• Opening the North Zone one week earlier than past two seasons, due to early freezing in the north in recent years;

• Reducing the scaup daily bag limit to one per day for 15 days, but then allowing two scaup per day for the remainder of the season.

The bag limit on scaup changes during the season, due to concerns over scaup populations.  In the North Zone, the limit will be one scaup per day from Sept. 26 to Oct. 10.  From Oct. 11 to Nov. 24 the bag limit on scaup increases to two per day.

In the South Zone, the bag limit on scaup is one per day from Oct. 3-11, and after a five-day closure, one per day from Oct. 17-22.  Then the bag limit increases to two per day from Oct. 23 to Dec. 6.

In the Mississippi River Zone, the bag limit on scaup is one per day from Oct. 3-11, and following a five-day closure the scaup limit continues at one per day from Oct. 17-22.  Then the bag limit increases to two scaup per day from Oct. 23 to Dec. 6.

• Reducing the Mississippi River Zone split from seven days to five days, so that it is the same as the South Zone season.

The North Zone duck season ends Nov. 24 with the South and Mississippi River zones end Dec. 6.

The early teal season is Sept. 1-9, followed by the youth waterfowl hunt Sept. 19-20.

Goose hunting opens Sept. 16 in the North Zone and ends Dec. 16.  In the South Zone goose hunting is open Sept. 16 to Oct. 11, Oct. 17 to Dec. 6, and Dec. 22 to January 5.

Goose hunting in the Mississippi River Subzone is open Oct. 3 to 11, and Oct. 17 to January 5.

The mourning dove season runs from Sep. 1 to Nov. 29.

Woodcock season runs from Sept. 19 to Nov. 2.
