A new Minnesota whitefish record?
A first-time ice fisherman from Oklahoma has caught what could be a Minnesota record whitefish.
Billy King reportedly caught the 13.57-pound, 29.5-inch fish Saturday, April 6 on a popular fishing spot known as “The Sandbar” off Springsteel Island near Warroad on Lake of the Woods.
On Monday, April 8, the fish was checked by Minnesota Fisheries in Baudette – and confirmed as a lake whitefish – and paperwork to register the fish was being processed, according to reports. As of Monday morning, results were still pending.
According to reports, the fish was weighed on an official registered scale at Doug’s Supermarket in Warroad – King got it there just before the store closed Saturday evening. It would best the previous record lake whitefish – 12 pounds, 4.5 ounces – by over a pound. That fish, caught March 21, 1999 on Leech Lake near Walker, measured 28-1/2 inches.
