Opening weekend of youth turkey season produces fewer birds

We could probably blame it on the Easter Bunny – hunters during the
opening weekend of the Illinois youth turkey season harvested 664 turkeys, down from last year’s opening weekend total of 776.

The opener was held Saturday, March 31 and Easter Sunday, which could be one reason the numbers came in lower.

We’ve put in a call to Luke Garver, DNR’s wild turkey program manager, to
get his take on the season kickoff.

The second weekend of the youth turkey season is April 7-8.

The regular spring turkey season opens in the south zone on April 9 and in the north zone on April 16.
