Deer harvest up during first firearms season; Pike County slips in rankings

There is an interesting aside to harvest numbers from the year's first shotgun deer weekend.

Pike County, which regularly leads all counties in deer harvest during all seasons, barely made the top 5 during this year's opening weekend, according to numbers released today by DNR.

As a whole,  hunters took 57,968 deer, up from the 51,830 taken during the first firearm weekend in 2014.

Randolph County topped the list this year with 1,619 deer taken. Jackson County followed with 1,586, while Adams (1,561), Jo Daviess (1,453) and Pike (1,419) rounded out the top 5. Jefferson (1,405) and Fulton (1,391) came close to knocking Pike out of the top 5 completely.

The second segment of the Illinois Firearm Deer Season is Dec. 3-6.
