Huge flathead catfish awaits certification as new Illinois state record

It appears Illinois has its first state record fish of 2015. On Aug. 28, James Klauzer was fishing at Sangchris Lake when he matched wits with a giant flathead catfish.  According to reports, Klauzer weighed his fish at Midstate Meats in Springfield and it came in at 81.45 pounds, enough to top the previous state record of 78 pounds. That fish had been caught by  Jody Harris in 1995 below the dam at Carlyle Lake.

Paperwork has not be completed to make Klauzer’s fish a state record, but all indications are that it will soon be official. DNR Assistant Fisheries Chief Dan Stephenson apparently showed up to take a look at the monster before Klauzer released it back into Sangchris.
