Minnesota’s spring turkey season now open; some youth licenses have wrong dates printed on them

St. Paul — At least some Minnesota resident youth turkey licenses have the wrong season dates printed on them.

The 2015 spring turkey season runs from Wednesday, April 15 to Thursday, May 28. But some youth licenses have been erroneously printed with the dates Thursday, April 16 to Friday, May 29.

Hunters age 17 and younger can purchase a license that is valid for any area of the state and for the entire season. The season for adults is broken into different time periods.

Steve Michaels, license program director for the Minnesota DNR, said law enforcement will use discretion in dealing with the issue out in the field.

“We’re aware of the issue,” Michaels said, noting that a hunter first caught the error.

He said the department would attempt to contact everyone who was given a license with the wrong dates. Michaels said the error occurred because the DNR’s electronic licensing system automatically rolled over the dates from the 2014 season to this year’s season, and nobody caught the discrepancy.

“We missed it,” he said.
